Environmental Services | Underground Storage Tank Services

As stated by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), “Approximately 550,000 underground storage tanks (USTs) nationwide store petroleum or hazardous substances. The greatest potential threat from a leaking UST is contamination of groundwater, the source of drinking water for nearly half of all Americans. EPA, states, territories, and tribes work in partnership with industry to protect the environment and human health from potential releases." Contamination from USTs can also pose a potential risk to the health of site occupants through a process commonly referred to as vapor intrusion.

Converse has been assisting client’s with Underground Storage Tank (UST) services dating back to the promulgation of UST regulations beginning in the late 1980’s. Converse provides the following services regarding USTs:

• Site Investigation & Remediation
• State Petroleum Fund Enrollment & Reimbursement

• Risk-Based Corrective Action Closures

Converse’s expert engineers, geologists, and scientists have successfully closed hundreds of UST cases and provided consultation and oversite of some of the most difficult site investigation and remediation cases involving USTs. Converse is well versed in State Petroleum Fund regulations and can assist UST owners with reimbursement of costs related to UST removal, site investigation, and remediation.

USTs can be found at most gasoline stations, many industrial and commercial properties, municipal yards and even residential homes. USTs can leak by corrosion of the tanks, lines, and dispensers, improperly installed fittings, or punctures resulting from measurement or construction activities. Releases can also occur as spills during fuel deliveries. Often during real estate transactions, assessment of the UST system for leaks/releases are conducted to determine if further investigation or remediation is warranted. Converse will provide an obligation free estimate for UST services.
