Air Intake Placement on Buildings: Why Poor Locations Pull Dangerous Odors into the Workspace

Air intake placement is one of the least examined decisions in a building's design, and it is often the reason a tenant reports exhaust odors, sewer smells or unexplained headaches with no visible source inside the space. An outdoor air intake located near a parking structure, loading dock, trash enclosure, generator exhaust, cooling tower, sanitary vent or a neighboring building's relief air will pull those contaminants directly into the occupied areas the system was built to serve. Carbon monoxide and diesel particulate from an adjacent garage are the most consequential examples, because the same equipment intended to dilute indoor contaminants becomes the delivery path for outdoor ones. ASHRAE Standard 62.1 and the mechanical codes set minimum separation distances between an air intake and known contaminant sources for exactly this reason, and Cal/OSHA and OSHA expectations for a safe workplace do not disappear because a building was permitted years ago under looser interpretation or because a later tenant improvement changed how the space is used.

Why Air Intake Placement Is a Cost Issue Before It Is a Compliance Issue

Building owners and employers rarely get to treat an odor complaint as a minor annoyance. Complaints escalate to regulatory inquiries, workers compensation claims, lease disputes and vacancy, and the common reaction is to chase symptoms with expensive guesswork such as full duct cleaning, coil replacement, blanket remediation or premature equipment replacement that does nothing when the actual problem is where the outside air is being drawn from. The efficient path is to identify the source first through a targeted assessment that documents carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, volatile organic compounds and particulate levels, evaluates the air intake location against the surrounding sources, and confirms the pathway before anyone specifies a fix.

In many cases the correction is modest, involving an extension or relocation of the intake, revised garage exhaust discharge, pressurization adjustments to keep the garage negative relative to occupied space, correction of a rooftop intake sitting downwind of an exhaust fan, added carbon monoxide monitoring with fan interlocks, or filtration matched to the contaminant.
